FENNIMORE — Fennimore prep football coach Dave Rosemeyer was somewhat stunned as he glanced at the scoreboard through the steady downpour at the beginning of the fourth quarter Friday night.
The Golden Eagles coach saw his team with a 26-point lead on non-conference opponent Lancaster and Rosemeyer still wasn't sure what was unfolding.
Fennimore held off a late rally by the Flying Arrows and improved to 2-0 this season with a 40-30 victory.
"I'm still not sure exactly what happened," Rosemeyer said. "I was kind of looking up at the scoreboard and wondering if it was true."
It was, and the end result not only made a believer out of Rosemeyer, but should go a long way in convincing teams the Golden Eagles are for real.
"We reloaded — we aren't rebuilding," junior quarterback Joe Carl said. "This is a big win for us and this gives us a lot of confidence."
Carl helped lead the way for the Golden Eagles as he accumulated 150 yards rushing and passed for another 79. He also had three touchdowns for Fennimore, scoring on runs of 13, 1 and 14 yards.
Senior running back Ben Hertrampf added two touchdowns, on runs of 9 and 3 yards, and rushed for 191 yards on 18 carries.
"We couldn't stop them," Lancaster coach John Hoch said of Carl and Hertrampf. "A tandem like Carl and Hertrampf is very tough and if they can stay healthy they are going to be a darn good football team."
The Flying Arrows (1-1) were led by sophomore running back Trevor Landon (23 carries, 120 yards and a TD) and senior quarterback Jordan Rolland (10 carries, 120 yards and a TD), but Hoch took little away from his team's performance.
"They were faster than we were and we didn't tackle well," Hoch said. "It's tough … but they are a really good football team."
