Semi-pro football: Mustangs win Iron Bowl to cap unbeaten season
MIDDLETON — Saturday night served as the perfect finish to a perfect season for the Madison Mustangs.
The Mustangs capped an undefeated campaign with a 23-13 victory over the Roscoe (Ill.) Rush in Iron Bowl XII at Breitenbach Stadium to claim the Ironman Football League championship.
"It was just a hard fought game, two heavyweights going back and forth," said Adam Smith, the Mustangs' offensive coordinator and director of football operations.
Madison (12-0) opened the scoring in the first quarter when linebacker Luke Staack sacked Rush quarterback Joe Cotton in end zone for a safety.
Mustangs running back George Randolph scored on a 7-yard run in the second quarter before Roscoe (9-3) got on the board via a 3-yard TD run by Deejay Spencer that made it a 9-7 game at halftime.
Madison quarterback Marques Korpela — a former Madison Memorial athlete who set a franchise record with 30 touchdowns this season — scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter, and then was instrumental in helping keep the Mustangs in front for good.
After Madison's Russ Beyer recovered a muffed punt by the Rush early in the fourth quarter, Korpela and the Mustangs were able to take advantage.
Korpela capped the ensuing possession with a 15-yard TD pass to Reggie Davis — a former Madison East athlete — for a commanding 23-7 lead.
Madison, which also won Iron Bowl V when the team was known as the Madison Seminoles, is the fifth IFL team to record a perfect season.
