Oates: Favre knows how tough Big D can be
By TOM OATES

GREEN BAY -- Brett Favre hasn't had many embarrassing moments in what has become his finest season. In fact, the biggest one might have come Sunday.

During the Green Bay Packers' usual team meeting on the first day of preparation for a game -- in this case their NFC showdown with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday night -- coach Mike McCarthy warned his players the media would make a big deal out of Packers' 18-year victory drought at Texas Stadium.

"He said, 'All you guys were in Little League the last time they played down there,' " Favre said. "I had to raise my hand and (say), 'Not all the guys.' "

Certainly not the red-faced Favre. Since the Packers beat the Cowboys and then-rookie quarterback Troy Aikman in 1989, they are 0-5 during the regular season and 0-8 overall at Dallas. Favre was the quarterback in every one of those losses.

So, does going 0-for-Dallas during his career bother Favre?

"Not anymore," he said. "It did when we lost every time. But it's just one of those things. We hope that changes this week."

The last time the Packers played at Dallas was in 1999. The other seven losses came during a four-season span starting in 1993 when the Packers were trying to reach the Super Bowl and the Cowboys were an obstacle they just couldn't overcome.

Wait, it gets worse. The Packers were beaten by at least 10 points in each of Favre's eight losses at Dallas. In those games, he played great once, OK three times and below par four times. In most of those games, the Packers would fall behind early, Favre would be forced to throw and trouble would follow.

But that's not Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders playing for Dallas anymore. It's Tony Romo, Marion Barber, Terrell Owens and Terence Newman. And Favre, wide receiver Donald Driver and long-snapper Rob Davis are the only current Packers who ever suited up for the team at Dallas.

That supports the Packers' contention that everything has changed since that frustrating stretch in the mid-1990s when the Packers played, and lost, at Dallas nearly twice a season.

"Don't care, " wide receiver Greg Jennings said. "We're right now. I couldn't care less what happened last year. That's in the past. It's a dead subject, honestly."

Well, not exactly. McCarthy brought it up because he knew it would be part of the discussion leading up to a game matching 10-1 teams that has huge playoff ramifications.

"Like I told our football team, 90 percent of you were in Little League the last time we played there, so it's really irrelevant," McCarthy said. "What they should be talking about is how many road games we've won in the last two years here because that, in my opinion, pertains to us as a football team."

The Packers have won seven straight road games and 10 of 13 under McCarthy. Already this season, Favre has crossed Denver and Kansas City off of the list of cities where he 's never won. He'd like to reduce the list further with a win in Dallas.

"They're playing great and I think we're playing pretty good, too," Favre said. "So we'll see what happens."

The way the Packers are playing, chances are it won't be embarrassing.
