The University of Wisconsin football team has had lousy weather hit the last two recruiting weekends, but it doesn't seem to have had a negative effect.
The Badgers picked up two recent oral commitments, landing cornerback Devin Smith from Coppell, Texas, and defensive end Anthony Mains from Golden Gate High School in Naples, Fla.
A bad winter storm delayed some recruits from arriving the weekend of Dec. 1-2, while the area was hit with lighter snow last weekend.
"Never know until the end," UW coach Bret Bielema said when asked about the impact weather can have on recruiting. "What we tried to do this year, our Southern recruits, we got in a lot during the course of the (season). I think that's had a positive effect on the recruiting process."
Smith, 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, was expected to visit last weekend. He had 40 tackles and five interceptions, including three he returned for touchdowns, as a senior. He also caught 22 passes for 470 yards and five touchdowns. His time in the 40-yard dash is listed at 4.5 seconds.
He reported a core grade-point average of 3.6 and a 1450 in the SAT. He was ranked as the No. 81 cornerback nationally by Scout.com and reportedly had 11 offers. His other favorites included Iowa, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Louisville.
Mains (6-foot-6, 221 pounds) originally committed to South Florida in October after visiting UW in September. He is ranked as the No. 72 defensive end prospect by Scout.com and has a reported time of 4.7 in the 40.
He reportedly has a 4.0 GPA and academics apparently played a role in his decision to switch to UW.
"My parents are all about academics, so the decision on me going (to UW) was easy for them," Mains told the Naples Daily News. "Wisconsin is better academically than USF and I feel more stable there."
Bielema is not allowed to talk about recruits until signing day Feb. 6.
