Like most successful junior golfers his age, Andrew Steinhofer is in the process of sending out resumes to prospective colleges.
The Madison La Follette junior has just about everything signed and sealed — including cover letter, a lengthy list of his upper-tier finishes, his below-par rounds and an in-the-works video showing his golf swing — to mail to a dozen college coaches later this week with the hope of playing golf at the next level.
So after Steinhofer fired a 1-under-par 71 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Morgan Stanley Shootout Wednesday, the thought of putting those packets on hold already was crossing his mind, especially if he went even lower Thursday.
"I may have to if I come out here and shoot 65 Thursday," said Steinhofer, who carded four birdies and three bogeys at University Ridge Golf Course. "I may have to find a spot for it."
Steinhofer took control of his round with a birdie 4 on the second hole and backed it up with birdies at Nos. 6, 8 and 11. He reached 3 under on the back nine before a few mistakes prevented him from cracking 70.
Steinhofer might need to break that barrier in today's final round in order to hold off teammate Max Hosking, the two-time defending individual champion who carded a 72 during a "sloppy" round.
"It's tough to make birdies from the trees," Hosking quipped.
Behind three sub-80 rounds by Nick Porchetta (75), Cody Strang (76) and Michael Murphy (76), Madison Edgewood shot a 308 to grab a two-stroke lead over Madison Memorial (310) in the team competition.
Middleton (316) and Sun Prairie (316) were tied for third, while Madison West (328) was fifth on a sunny but breezy spring day.
The Crusaders have been narrowly edged by the Spartans on several occasions this season, including a 299-301 defeat at the recent city meet.
What would it mean to finally come out on top?
"It would be the first time this year in like four or five tournaments," said Strang, admittedly still ironing out the kinks in his swing after the hockey season. "So it would feel good."
But the Spartans aren't going down without a fight. Memorial is undefeated in Big Eight Conference play this season and has won four invitationals.
Plus, coach Jeremy Schlitz promised he'd take the team out for wings if they broke 600.
"Yeah, we've got a little work to do," said senior Sean Regan, who carded a 76. "He expects a lot from us. And we expect a lot out of ourselves.
"There's a lot of really good players out here," Regan added. "But as a team, we feel like we're the best."
