Brewers: Marlins finish off sweep

MIAMI -- Brewers manager Ned Yost insists he did not shake up the lineup Thursday night, when he rested his three regular players with the highest on-base percentages, heading into a four-game series against St. Louis starting tonight in Milwaukee.

Well, maybe a shakeup is in order.

Milwaukee stranded 11 runners against four Florida pitchers and right-hander Carlos Villanueva (1-4) allowed seven runs in five innings as the Brewers dropped their season-high sixth straight game 7-2 to the Marlins.

"We're just not playing very well right now," Yost said. "We're not swinging the bats anywhere near what we're capable of doing."

They finished 1-5 in their season series against Florida, scoring a total of 10 runs. They finished a three-city road trip at 2-7 and fell to 16-18.

"A shakeup wasn't intended," Yost told MLB.com. "If this continues, obviously, we're going to have to shake the lineup up a little bit. We're going to have to move some guys around. I'm not ready to do that yet."

Villanueva remained winless since his first start of the season April 4. His ERA rose to 6.46.

"I didn't feel bad," he said. "I don't think I should look at the scoreboard tonight and watch me give up seven runs. I don't feel like I pitched that way. But that's the way it's going right now."

Matt Treanor had a career high in RBIs with one swing, hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning to all but finish off Villanueva and all but clinch the Marlins' three-game sweep. Jorge Cantu also homered for the Marlins, who won their fourth game in a row and matched their best start after 34 games (20-14).

Marlins starter Mark Hendrickson needed 109 pitches to get through 4.1 innings but allowed only one run. Logan Kensing (1-0) retired all eight batters he faced, striking out four.

"We did a nice job pitching to them," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "And also, they're not swinging the bat. That lineup over there could get hot at any time."

Maybe Yost should have kept catcher Jason Kendall, right fielder Corey Hart and first baseman Prince Fielder in the lineup. All were on the bench for the start of the series finale.

Before Thursday, Fielder and Hart had started all 33 games and Kendall had started 30.

Mike Rivera started in place of Kendall, Gabe Kapler started for Hart and Joe Dillon for Fielder.

With the team struggling to score runs, was it difficult for Yost to sit his most productive hitters?

"It is, but it isn't, but it is," Yost said. "You understand that every once in a while, for their own benefit, they need a break. Everybody gets them."

Fielder was 1-for-8 spanning the first two games of the series and was hitting .258 in the first eight games on the road trip with no home runs and two RBIs. Hart was hitting .333 on the trip, but was 0-for-6 against the Marlins. Kendall was 1-for-4 in the series and hit .214 on the road trip.

For Fielder and Hart, who had manned their positions for all but the last few innings of last week's blowout loss in Chicago, Yost referred to Thursday as "their once-every-six-weeks day off."

Were Yost to consider changes to the lineup, he might start with the leadoff spot, where second baseman Rickie Weeks is hitting .188 after going hitless in four at-bats Thursday. His on-base percentage is under .320.

Weeks hits leadoff for the Brewers mostly because the team does not have other clear-cut options.

"We don't have a ton of leadoff-type guys, but we do have some guys with on-base percentages at .360 or better," Yost said. "You could move some of those guys up to the top of the lineup. We're not there yet."
