MIDDLETON — Megan Beers knew that ending her prep track career as a Southern Badger individual champion wouldn't go a long way toward her personal goals for the WIAA state track and field meet.
The Oregon senior wanted those gold medals for a much simpler reason.
"I actually had a teammate tell me this," Beers said. "It's bragging rights. It really is. It's something, once you're conference champ, no one can take that from you no matter what."
Beers won the 800 meters and the 1,600, breaking the conference record in each race. Her time of 2 minutes, 19.56 seconds in the 800 bested her own mark set in 2007 (2:20.35).
Her 5:11.45 effort in the 1,600 surpassed former Verona athlete Asia Myrland's 2005 time of 5:12.66. But the medals, not the records, were the goal all along Tuesday night at Middleton High School.
"For all of (my races) I wanted to be conference champ," she said. "Not any easy goal, by any means, but a realistic one, I think."
Verona won the boys (200) and girls (194) team titles, capping off their final year in the Southern Badger. Next year, the Wildcats will move to the Big Eight. Verona senior Kyle Martin said a final conference championship was a priority.
"We've been thinking about it since the conference meet last year," said Martin, who won the 200 in :23.81. "It's been conference and state and that's pretty much it."
Added Verona senior Emma Spoon, who finished fifth in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200: "Being our last year in the Badger South, it makes it more special. The fact that our seniors haven't lost a dual or a conference meet yet makes it kind of a dynasty thing and we wanted to finish it up strong."
Monona Grove finished second (164) on the boys' side behind the performances of seniors Kendric Smith, Nick Grosso and their sprint relays.
Smith won the triple jump (43 feet, 3 inches) and 110 high hurdles (:15.47), while Grosso added titles in the shot put (55-9) and discus (164-1).
The 400 and 800 relay teams finished first. Monroe (124) was runner-up among the girls, while Oregon, behind Beers, finished third (118).
Beers' records weren't the only ones to fall. Monona Grove sophomore Angela Boushea set a Badger Conference standard (both divisions) in the shot put.
Boushea threw 41-8, breaking former Monroe thrower Jackie Curtis' 2007 distance of 41-7.
