Brewers: New lineup puts Yost on hot seat

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers have as set a lineup as there is in the major leagues. So when manager Ned Yost shuffles the deck, the inevitable question is why.

When Yost posted his 19th different lineup of the season for Wednesday night's 40th game, the one noticeable difference is he had Mike Cameron moving up a spot to the leadoff role after 13 games in the second spot.

Cameron was there in place of Rickie Weeks, the second baseman who got the game off and was replaced by Crag Counsell, who hit seventh.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy, seventh in Yost's usual lineup, moved up to the second spot.

"Nine times out of 10, it's more about getting other guys at-bats than giving a guy a break," Yost explained.

It was Counsell's eighth start of the year.

When Yost used the word "break," he was asked if anyone else was getting a "mental break."

That's been the catch phrase at Miller Park the past few days, or ever since St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen and Brewers closer Eric Gagne received mental health days from their respective managers.

Yost, obviously tiring of the incessant questions about Gagne, managed a weak smile.

"I need a mental break from you guys," he said.

Lost in the furor

If not for Gagne's return to the closer's role, the pitching story of Tuesday would have been starter Carlos Villanueva.

He looked much more like the Villanueva of last September when he was 2-2 with a 1.99 ERA than the Villanueva of his first seven starts.

Yost pulled Villanueva after six innings and 82 pitches. He allowed two earned runs. Villanueva, 2-4 with a 6.00 ERA, made a slight adjustment on the rubber, moving closer to the third-base side of the slab.

"From the third inning on, I just got into a rhythm," he said. "I was able to not worry about where I was standing, where I'm releasing the ball. I was able to do just exactly what I wanted to with my pitches. I felt very comfortable."

Jeffress returns

Right-hander Jeremy Jeffress, the club's top draft pick in the 2006 draft, is scheduled to make his season debut today for Class A Brevard County after serving a 50-game suspension for testing positive for what baseball terms a drug of abuse, in this case, marijuana.

Jeffress, 20, was 9-5 with a 3.13 ERA last season for the West Virginia Power, the Brewers' lower Class A affiliate. Jeffress served his suspension at the Brewers' extended spring training camp at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix.

Around the horn

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio was at the game. He is here to attend the owners meeting. ... Regular public address announcer Robb Edwards underwent open heart bypass surgery Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack earlier in the day. He was said to be resting comfortably in the intensive care unit of Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls. Gene Mueller, who hosts the morning drive show for WTMJ-AM in Milwaukee, has replaced Edwards. ... The Brewers have played 18 games at Miller Park this season and have yet to open the roof.  Game-time temperature was 56 outside. The forecast for this afternoon's game calls for temperatures in the low 60s under cloudy skies with winds out of the east — off Lake Michigan — at about 10 mph
