Brewers notes: Riske to DL, Capuano has surgery

MILWAUKEE — The news on reliever David Riske's right elbow was good for the Milwaukee Brewers, but not so good for Riske.

Left-hander Chris Capuano, though, received a double dose of bad news.

Riske, who pulled himself out after an eighth-inning pitch Wednesday night, underwent an exam Thursday morning that revealed an inflamed tendon in his right elbow.

The good news is that Riske is expected to be able to start throwing again in four to five days. The bad news is that the Brewers still placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

"Going on the DL is never good news," said Riske, whose previous visits to the disabled list have involved back problems with the exception of one shoulder problem. "But there is nothing seriously wrong."

Riske was 0-1 in 18 appearances covering 21 innings. He has a 4.71 ERA, but has allowed just two runs over his last 10 innings -- a 1.80 ERA.

Milwaukee called up right-hander Mark DiFelice from Class AAA Nashville to take Riske's spot on the roster.

DiFelice, a veteran of four major league organizations with independent league experience, was 3-0 with a 3.91 ERA in four starts for the Sounds. He likely will fit into the bullpen's long relief role, while Seth McClung assumes some of Riske's mid- and late-inning responsibilities.

Capuano, meanwhile, underwent his second elbow ligament reconstruction surgery by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. — nearly six years to the day after the first one.

Capuano suffered the injury during spring training. He tried to rehabilitate it without surgery, but felt pain while throwing Monday. Thursday's surgery was for exploratory purposes, but the Brewers said Andrews found a torn ligament requiring reconstruction.

"The barometer is that it takes one year to come back from this kind of surgery," Milwaukee assistant general manager Gord Ash said. "But we don't know what it means when it's the second time around."
