UW sports: Woltman, Badgers make a move

Behind junior Dan Woltman, the University of Wisconsin men's golf team put itself in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Badgers shot a second-round 290 at the NCAA West regional Friday in Bremerton, Wash., and were in 10th place with a two-round score of 594 heading into today's final round. The top 10 teams in the 27-team regional advance to the NCAA tournament.

Woltman, a Beaver Dam native, fired a 4-under 68 and was in second place individually at 5-under 139.

He trailed Oregon's Joey Benedetti by one stroke.

Tyler Obermueller shot a 71 and was tied for 16th place. Jordan Elsen (74) and former Middleton athlete Danny Zimmerman (77) rounded out the scoring for UW.

Southern Cal leads the tournament at 574. Only five shots separate the teams tied in seventh place from the ones tied for 14th place.

Men's track and field

Led by three scorers in the 10,000 meters, UW was in sixth place at the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.

"We had good performances in the final events today," UW coach Ed Nuttycombe said. "It was a good start. There's a lot of track meet left, but it was a good solid start for us."

The Badgers placed second, third and fifth in the 10,000 meters, earning 18 points.

Sophomore and former McFarland athlete Andrew Lacy led UW, crossing in 30 minutes, 13.51 seconds. He finished less than three tenths of a second behind Minnesota's Chris Rombough, a New London native who won in 30:13.12.

UW junior Christian Wagner was third in 30:14.50, while freshman Landon Peacock took fifth in 30:22.26.

The Badgers also picked up three points from senior Derek Thiel, who placed sixth in the pole vault. Thiel tied his personal best and NCAA regional qualifying height with a clearance of 16 feet, 6� inches. Purdue's Eric Sparks won the event at 17-6 �.

Freshman David Grzesiak was in fifth place in the overall decathlon standings after the first day of competition.

Grzesiak had 3,638 points after the first five events, boosted by his leap of 6-7 to win the high jump.

Women's track and field

Senior Katrina Rundhaug, a former Dodgeville athlete, finished second in the 10,000 with a time of 33:57.61 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.

Junior Alicia Pabich took fifth in the event at 34:50.57.

The Badgers were in second place in the team standings.

Junior Amanda Hoeppner placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 183 feet, 2 inches. Hoeppner, a former Lakeside Lutheran athlete who set the UW record in the event last weekend at 187-0, recorded her highest Big Ten finish.

"We're where we thought we needed to be to have a good meet," UW coach Jim Stintzi said. "Things are looking good so far and it was a solid day for us so I'm happy."
