Eduardo M. Flores, 13, gets a good grip on the 31-pound, 12-ounce carp he fought with for about 10 minutes before successfully reeling in June 7.

His effort was part of Free Fishing Day at Alumni Pond at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M.

Numerous states, including Wisconsin, provided the opportunity for adults to fish for free without having to purchase a license.
