A day after Eau Claire ended the Madison Mallards' Northwoods League playoff hopes with a victory, the Express officially finished off the amateur baseball team's season in similar fashion.
Madison Area Technical College right-hander Craig Meier threw four scoreless innings before Eau Claire unloaded for five runs in the fifth en route to a 9-7 win in front of 7,352 fans Sunday night at Warner Park.
Madison, which lost its final three games following a league-record, 16-game winning streak, pushed its season attendance total to 209,856 fans, which included the franchise's 1,000,000th overall spectator Thursday night.
The Mallards (38-29 overall, 22-11 second half) led 1-0 after four inning, but the Express (42-26, 25-9) tagged Meier for a pair of two-out RBI singles and capitalized on two errors for three more unearned runs.
An inning later, the Mallards pulled within 6-3 on a Blake Eller's RBI double and Mitch Saum's run-scoring single.
The teams responded with seventh-inning runs, Eau Claire added a pair in the eighth and the Mallards rallied for three in the bottom of the eighth — on an RBI double by Eryk McConnell and a run-scoring triple and a steal of home by All-Star Randy Molina.
The Express will face first-half South Division champion Green Bay in the best-of-three divisional playoffs starting today.
