After facing Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in last season's ACC-Big Ten Challenge, the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team will find itself on the road for a second straight season in the event.
According to the ACC-Big Ten Challenge schedule released Tuesday, the Badgers will face Virginia Tech on Dec. 1 in Blacksburg, Va., in a game scheduled to be televised on one of the ESPN networks.
It marks the third time in four seasons UW will be on the road for its ACC-Big Ten Challenge game, and the sixth time it has been assigned a road game in the event's 10-year history.
ESPN spokesman Mike Humes said the Badgers will host ACC-Big Ten Challenge games in 2009 and 2010 as part of an agreement between the network and conferences that mandates teams play three home games and three road games in the event over a six-year span. That agreement is entering its fourth season.
"It's a matter of balancing the schedule. There's travel, there's building availability, there's a lot of things that go into it," Humes said of ACC-Big Ten Challenge scheduling. "It's part of organizing these matchups."
The game between the Badgers and Hokies will be the first meeting between the programs, and is one of six first-time meetings in event history.
Games on Dec. 2 include: Duke at Purdue; Clemson at Illinois; Ohio State at Miami; Virginia at Minnesota; and Iowa at Boston College. Games on Dec. 3 include: North Carolina vs. Michigan State at Ford Field in Detroit; Indiana at Wake Forest; Michigan at Maryland; Florida State at Northwestern; and Penn State at Georgia Tech.
UW is 3-6 in ACC-Big Ten Challenge play, with victories over Maryland (2000 in Milwaukee, 2004) and Florida State (2006) and losses to Wake Forest (1999, 2002, 2005), Georgia Tech (2001), Maryland (2003) and Duke (2007).
In addition to the game at Virginia Tech, the Badgers also will travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette during the non-conference portion of the schedule. UW's known home non-conference opponents at this time are UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay and Texas.
The Badgers open the 2008-09 season Nov. 21 to 24 at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. UW, which won the Paradise Jam in 2005, is joined in the tournament field by Connecticut, Iona, La Salle, Miami (Fla.), San Diego, Southern Miss and Valparaiso.
