Perhaps it was merely a fitting display for a game that was postponed a day.
Even though the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team emerged with a win, nobody was going to mistake Sunday afternoon's 74-60 defeat of Air Force in a non-conference game at the Kohl Center as one of the team's best showings this season.
"(I'm) excited about the fact that we won the game, (but) certainly wanted to be a little bit more proficient and a little better in execution for us both offensively and defensively," said UW coach Lisa Stone, whose team had been scheduled to play Saturday morning until the Falcons ran into travel problems because of the weather in Colorado.
Even though the Badgers built a 10-point halftime lead and rarely appeared to be seriously threatened, it wasn't the most convincing of wins. UW held a double-digit lead for much of the second half, but it also didn't break away from Air Force until late.
But the Badgers (5-3) did enough, getting a balanced offensive attack -- four players scored in double digits and two more chipped in seven points apiece -- and forcing the Falcons (4-5) into 20 turnovers, 12 of which came in the second half.
"It was just disappointing overall, as in how we played: How we played defense and how we played offense," said UW senior guard Jolene Anderson, who scored 13 points and made four of her six 3-point attempts.
"And it's just something that we've just got to pick up, especially going into the last week before we get into the Big Ten season."
Senior forward Danielle Ward paced the Badgers with a season-high 14 points. Senior guard Janese Banks and freshman forward Tara Steinbauer each had 13.
Ward also had five of UW's 12 steals, grabbed six rebounds and blocked one shot. And the Badgers made a season-best nine 3-pointers.
"We had a couple of things we wanted to do and one of the biggest things was we were going to try to keep Jolene Anderson under her average (of 22.4 points per game entering Sunday)," said Air Force coach Ardie McInelly, whose team arrived in Madison Saturday night.
"It looks like we did that, but we allowed other people to step up and play really well."
Still, UW didn't look real sharp in winning its third straight. Falcons junior Brooke Cultra's jumper made it 49-43 with 13 minutes, 55 seconds left in the game. But the Badgers steadily pulled away, and after freshman guard Alyssa Karel hit a 3-pointer from the right wing 1:53 later, Air Force never got closer than eight points.
"I think had we played (Saturday) it might have been a little bit different, because I thought there was quite a bit of snap in our team (Saturday) in practice," said Stone, whose team hosts UW-Green Bay on Tuesday.
"Hopefully we'll have that back on Tuesday."
