UW women's basketball: Badgers fall in Big Ten opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — For as badly as they had played, it could have been a lot worse.

The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team was trailing Purdue by only five points after an abysmal first half that saw them score just 24 points and shoot 28.1 percent.

But after halftime, it got worse.

The Badgers never found their offensive rhythm and suffered a 65-48 loss to the Boilermakers in both teams' Big Ten Conference opener Friday night at Mackey Arena.

UW shot 31.3 percent in the loss, their 10th straight to Purdue and 20th straight here.

"We did not get in the right rhythm," Badgers coach Lisa Stone said in her postgame radio interview. "It was very disappointing. I thought our first half was very disappointing, in fact, an embarrassment tonight."

Purdue led 19-11 in the first half before UW went on a 10-2 run, including two 3-pointers by senior guard Janese Banks, to tie the score at 21 with 6 minutes, 48 seconds left.

But that was the last time the Badgers (7-4 overall, 0-1 Big Ten), who never led, drew even.

Purdue recovered and went on an 8-3 run that included two baskets by junior center Danielle Campbell, who had a game-high 19 points, to take a 29-24 lead at halftime.

"We're only down five at halftime, playing as poorly as we did in the first half," said Stone, whose team had won five straight entering the game. "The problem was that we didn't respond in the second half."

No, UW did not.

The Boilermakers (5-6, 1-0) opened the second half on a 19-7 run and took a 48-31 lead after junior forward Natasha Bogdanova hit back-to-back 3-pointers. The Badgers made one last push.

A scoop shot by senior guard Jolene Anderson cut Purdue's lead to 52-42 with 7:30 left, but the Boilermakers scored the next six points to put the game out of reach.

Anderson, who shot 3-for-13 for six points, saw her streak of scoring in double figures end at 39 games.

"They weren't showing anything we hadn't seen before," Anderson said. "It was a matter of our determination coming through, and it didn't work for 40 minutes."

Sophomore point guard Rae Lin D'Alie scored 14 points to pace UW, and senior forward Danielle Ward added 13.

But they were the only Badgers in double figures. Purdue, on the other hand, had four players combine for 53 points.

Junior forward Lakisha Freeman scored 12 points for the Boilermakers, while Bogdanova and sophomore guard FahKara Malone each added 11.

The Badgers also attempted only four free throws, while Purdue went 10-for-17 from the line.

"At this point I'm devastated," Stone said. "I'm at a loss for words. I don't even know what to tell our team."
