UW women's basketball: Badgers fall flat again
State Journal staff

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- After one minute of play of Sunday night's game at Illinois, the University of Wisconsin women 's basketball team had missed three shots.

Things didn't get much better for the Badgers.

With star Jolene Anderson shooting 4-for-20 from the field, the Badgers shot just 32.3 percent as they dropped their second straight Big Ten Conference game, 64-54 in front of 1,485 fans at Assembly Hall.

Anderson made the first field goal for the Badgers (7-5 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) with a 3-pointer 3 minutes, 1 second into the game that tied the score at 5.

But that was the last time the Fighting Illini (10-3, 2-0) didn't trail, and it proved to be Anderson's only 3-pointer of the game.

She finished with 10 points -- well below her season average of 18.7 per game -- and is averaging only 8 points in UW's first two Big Ten games after being held to six in Friday 's 65-48 loss at Purdue.

Fellow senior Janese Banks led the Badgers with 15 points, and her basket with 9:34 remaining in the first half finally got UW into double figures, down 19-11.

Danielle Ward and Rae Lin D'Alie added 10 points apiece for the Badgers, who are 1-4 in road games.

Illinois also had four players score in double figures, led by Jenna Smith.

The center, who leads the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding, had a game-high 16 points and grabbed five rebounds, also well below her season averages of 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Smith's jumper gave Illinois the lead for good at 7-5.

UW was 9-for-35 (25.7 percent) from the field in the first half as it trailed by eight at halftime. The Badgers got only as close as six in the second half, the last time at 45-39.

Guard Chelsea Gordon added 13 points, and was the primary defender against Anderson. Lacey Simpson and Lori Bjork chipped in 10 points each for the Illini, who shot 40.7 percent from the floor in their first home game in 25 days.
