University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema made it clear after Tuesday's 21-17 loss to Tennessee in the Outback Bowl he wasn't pleased with the officiating done by the Mountain West Conference crew, though after the game he mistakenly referred to the officials as being from the Western Athletic Conference.
Bielema's first beef came on the Badgers' second possession of the game when Tyler Donovan absorbed what appeared to be a helmet-to-helmet hit from Tennessee safety Eric Berry on a 6-yard touchdown run.
"I was very upset with the helmet-to-helmet," Bielema said. "One of the issues we've gone over as coaches and been warned about is any helmet-to-helmet (hits) are going to be called. The back judge apologized that he missed the call. I know you guys are going to give us some questions in the offseason about scheduling and different things like that. I can guarantee you, I'm never going to schedule a game that's officiated by (Mountain West Conference) officials, that's for sure."
Bielema also was miffed when the clock continued to run with less than a minute in the game -- and the Badgers trailing 21-17 -- following a 10-yard completion from Donovan to sophomore tight end Garrett Graham that resulted in a first down.
"When you're in that situation, a first down stops the clock and allows the offense to come together, even for a split second, because the chains have to move," Bielema said. "They told us it was second down, so we line up and we're trying to get the play run. All of a sudden, a white hat comes in and calls the first down. I assumed five, to six, maybe seven seconds had ticked off there. So, I just asked, 'Do we need to put some time back if it's a first down?' It's not my judgment. I don't know the official, I just figured it was reasonable doubt. I'm glad they went upstairs and I'm sure the quality of the (Mountain West) officials, they got the proper call."
