UW men's hockey: Davies keys draw in Alaska
By DAN LIEN
For the State Journal
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Adversity can have many effects on a hockey team. It can cripple a season or cause players to rally around a cause.

University of Wisconsin men's hockey coach Mike Eaves and his team are hoping last Friday's controversial loss in Denver will serve as the latter.

A no-goal ruling at the end of the contest with the Pioneers cost UW at least a tie, but sparked the Badgers to two consecutive road wins, their first in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this season.

That road unbeaten streak continued Saturday night as UW rallied for a 4-4 tie against Alaska-Anchorage at Sullivan Arena thanks to Michael Davies' rebound goal with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in the game.

Could an adverse ruling in a tough loss to Denver be the turning point after a mediocre start?

"We hope so," Eaves said Friday night. "Only time will tell."

"I think it's a little early to say that right now," senior forward Matthew Ford said. "But it's definitely motivated us the last few games. We just need to keep that fire going."

The Badgers found additional adversity Saturday night, falling behind twice by two goals.

UW found itself trailing 2-0 midway through the first period.

Two power-play goals by the Seawolves' Brad McCabe and Peter Cartwright forced the Badgers to play catch up.

UW, however, responded with two power-play goals of its own during a 4-minute stretch of the opening period. Davies knocked in a rebound from mid air following Blake Geoffrion's shot at 14:27.

Geoffrion then tied the game at 2 at 18:07, knocking in Kyle Klubertanz's rebound from the goal mouth for his seventh goal of the season.

But Alaska-Anchorage (6-10-6 overall, 2-10-4 WCHA) scored with 52 seconds left in the period, with McCabe getting his second goal of the game on a rebound past Badgers junior goaltender Shane Connelly.

Connelly stopped just four of the first seven shots he faced.

UW then fell behind 4-2 midway through the second when the Seawolves converted on a 5-on-3 power play. Shane Lovedahl's one-time slap shot from the point off Kevin Clark's pass clanked in off the post for his first goal of the season.

The Badgers cut the lead to 4-3 at the 7:10 mark of the third period.

Junior forward Ben Street carried sophomore defenseman Jamie McBain's pass up the right side and put a nifty move on the Seawolves defenseman.

His backhander zipped between Alaska-Anchorage goaltender Jon Olthuis' legs for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Davies completed the comeback for the Badgers with his second goal of the game and seventh of the season.

He picked up Klubertanz's rebound and had his first two shots stopped by Olthuis before his third whack at the loose puck found the back of the net.

UW (10-10-3, 6-8-2) surrendered more than two goals against the Seawolves for just the second time in 15 games between the two teams.

Alaska-Anchorage had scored more than four goals in just three games this season.
