There is no time like stretch time to make an impact on the court, and that's exactly what Caity DuPont is doing for the University of Wisconsin volleyball team.
The sophomore outside hitter, who has become a regular on the left side over the last six matches, had a career-high 16 kills Friday night to help pace the Badgers to an easy 30-20, 30-22, 30-23 sweep of Iowa in a Big Ten Conference match watched by 5,046 at the UW Field House.
It was the fourth time in the past six matches that DuPont has reached double figures in kills.
"I'm going out on the court now and not second-guessing myself," said DuPont, who jostled with freshman Allison Wack at the position for much of the season.
"I know what I'm supposed to do and know what I can do. It's all about confidence."
The ninth-ranked Badgers (24-4 overall, 16-3 Big Ten), who have won five of their past six matches, should have some confidence heading into tonight's regular-season finale against Minnesota at the Field House.
UW economically dispatched the lowly Hawkeyes (9-21, 1-18), who have lost 15 straight Big Ten matches and 33 of their past 34 games.
"One of our goals was to do it in three," UW coach Pete Waite said.
DuPont played a key role in making that happen.
She had five kills in eight attempts in the first game, was 4-for-8 hitting in the second and 7-for-10 in the third.
She also contributed two of UW's six aces with her hard, driving jump serve that serves as a nice change of pace to the Badgers' load of floater serves.
"Each week she has been on the court, she has gotten more confident and stronger. She's really earned it."
The Badgers also received some strong play from Morgan Salow, the junior middle from Manchester, Iowa, who subbed for regular middle Audra Jeffers and came up with five kills and two shared blocks.
Jeffers injured a heel in Monday night's victory at Ohio State and is questionable for tonight's match with the Gophers.
Jocelyn Wack, the senior libero who along with four other seniors is preparing to play her last conference match at the Field House, added two aces to the serve attack, giving her 100 for her career — 15th on UW's career list.
