UW women's hockey: Badgers win 8th straight, set attendance record
State Journal staff

It was just one of those days when everything went right for an entire program.

Senior forward Jinelle Zaugg scored two goals and junior goaltender Jessie Vetter posted her eighth shutout of the season as the University of Wisconsin women's hockey team beat St. Cloud State 4-0 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday at the Kohl Center.

The win over the ninth-ranked Huskies was the eighth in a row for the No. 5 Badgers (18-6-2, 14-4-2 WCHA).

What's more, the crowd of 5,377 set an NCAA women's hockey attendance record.

Because of the record attendance at the "Fill the Bowl" contest, $5,377 was raised for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.

As was the case in Friday's series opener -- a 4-1 UW win -- the Badgers jumped ahead of the Huskies (15-7-4, 10-7-3) early in the first period. Sophomore Meghan Duggan took a shot just to the left of the St. Cloud State net, and Zaugg was there to slap in the rebound and give UW a 1-0 lead 4 minutes, 25 seconds into the game.

The Badgers extended their lead just more than 4 minutes later. Junior forward Erik Lawler skated into the Huskies' zone and gave the puck up for Malee Windmeier, who fired a shot on goalie Kendall Newell. Freshman forward Hilary Knight tipped the puck past Newell for a 2-0 lead.

Zaugg and freshman Mallory Deluce added insurance for the Badgers early in the third period -- they each scored goals in the first 6 minutes of the final period.

For Zaugg, the goals were the 77th and 78th of her career. She needs seven more to break the all-time UW record.

Vetter had 18 saves in the victory. It was the 23rd shutout of her career. Newell made 29 saves for the Huskies.
