UW wrestling: No. 1 Iowa holds off Badgers
Just as Kyle Massey predicted, it all came down to his match -- the last one of the day.
The University of Wisconsin junior heavyweight, ranked 10th in the country, entered his bout with Iowa's sixth-ranked Matt Fields Sunday with the Badgers down by five points in a Big Ten Conference dual meet at the UW Field House.
A pin by Massey would mean a stunning victory for No. 13 UW against the top-ranked Hawkeyes. Anything less, though, and the Badgers would fall short of an amazing second straight win over Iowa -- UW's win over the Hawkeyes last year was its first since 1965.
Massey pulled off an individual upset, beating Fields 6-5, but that was enough for Iowa to hold on for a 22-20 victory in front of 2,534 fans.
"At the point we were at, I was thinking just to get the win," Massey said. "If I had an opportunity out there I would have, of course, gone for (the pin). But the opportunity never came, so I just went out there and got the win."
Each team won five matches, but UW coach Barry Davis said the difference for Iowa (16-1 overall, 5-0 Big Ten) were pins at 149 and 184 pounds.
"I think our guys competed hard," said Davis, whose team fell to 11-3-1, 2-2. "But we just gave up too many bonus points. They've got to realize that we've got a good team here. We had a chance to beat the No. 1 ranked team in the country -- the program is that close."
