DULUTH, Minn. -- Senior Jinelle Zaugg scored two goals and freshman Mallory Deluce had a goal and two assists, but the University of Wisconsin women's hockey team dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Minnesota-Duluth in the championship game of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Face-off at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Sunday.
The fifth-ranked Badgers (27-8-3) overcame a 4-1 deficit to force the extra session, but No. 3 Duluth's Haley Irwin scored the deciding goal 6 minutes, 32 seconds into OT with a shot from the top of the right circle to give UW its first loss in one month.
With her first goal of the game, Zaugg became UW's all-time career goals leader, breaking the previous record of 84 held by former UW athlete Meghan Hunter.
Junior goaltender Jessie Vetter, a former Monona Grove athlete, made 29 saves for UW.
The Badgers quickly found themselves down 2-0 as Laura Fridfinnson and Myriam Trepanier scored goals less than two minutes apart early in the first. Tournament MVP Elin Holmlov made it 3-0 with a power-play goal at the 16:11 mark of the first.
Zaugg then helped give UW get a bit of momentum heading into the first intermission, scoring a rebound on the power play. But Duluth (31-4-1) opened a three-goal cushion again on another power-play score.
The Badgers responded with two goals in a 61-second span late in the second to cut the lead to 4-3.
First Jasmine Giles fired a shot from the top of the right circle through traffic for a power-play goal, then Zaugg redirected a drive by Rachel Bible into the net.
The score remained 4-3 until Deluce scored her 12th goal of the season with 2:49 left in regulation to force overtime.
