LOS ANGELES — The scoreline showed a shutout defeat at the hands of one of the nation's top teams.
But there was much more to the University of Wisconsin men's tennis team's 4-0 loss to third-seeded UCLA in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Badgers nearly won the doubles point, and had their chances in singles competition as well — despite losing top player Moritz Baumann to an injury.
In the end, though, UW's season came to an end, while UCLA is headed for a date with Florida State in the round of 16.
The Bruins took the early lead through wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Yet it could have gone the other way.
UW seniors Jeremy Sonkin and Felipe Bellido led 5-4 at No. 3 doubles, but dropped the final four games to Michael Look and Jeremy Drean.
Sophomores Michael Dierberger and Luke Rassow-Kantor were up 6-4 for the Badgers at No. 2, and also led 7-6. They couldn't hold on, though, as UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine and Holden Seguso rallied for a 9-7 win.
Baumann, a sophomore, and senior Nolan Polley were leading 8-7 at No. 1 doubles, but with the point already decided, their match with Harel Srugo and Nick Meister wasn't finished.
Baumann then was unable to take his usual spot at No. 1 singles for UW (18-10) because of an unspecified injury. Polley — the Badgers' regular No. 2 player — filled in, and split the first two sets with Srugo, the nation's 23rd-ranked player.
It didn't matter, though, because the match ended after the Bruins got wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles to clinch a spot in the next round.
Dehaine beat Sonkin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 and Drean handled Bellido 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth spot. Dierberger won the first set of his matchup with Look at No. 4, but proceeded to drop the next two to fall 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 and give UCLA (23-1) the victory.
That left Polley's match not completed, along with Marek Michalicka's contest with Seguso at No. 2 and Rassow-Kantor's matchup with Meister at No. 6.
Michalicka had split the first two sets (1-6, 7-5), while Rassow-Kantor had a 3-2 lead in the second set after losing the first 5-7.
"I really thought we played a tough Wisconsin team today," said UCLA coach Billy Martin, whose team was 14-0 at home this season. "Doubles was extremely close and I thought could've gone either way. I thought we came out and played a little bit better in singles. We didn't play our best tennis, but this is a match that is definitely going to help us heading into the round of 16."
The Badgers' 18 wins were their most since 1990, when they won 20. UW, which also lost 4-0 last year to Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA tournament, has never made it past the second round in four NCAA appearances.
Assuming he is healthy enough to compete, Baumann will play in the NCAA individual tournament, which begins May 21 in Tulsa, Okla.
