Madison Sports Hall of Fame: Nuttycombe heads 2008 induction class
The Madison Sports Hall of Fame announced its four-member 2008 induction class: Ed Nuttycombe, Sandy Botham, Wayne "Knobby" Kelliher and Glenn Borland.
Nuttycombe has led the University of Wisconsin men's track and field team to 23 Big Ten Conference indoor and outdoor championships -- and the 2007 NCAA indoor title -- in his 25 years as coach.
Botham was a standout in basketball, volleyball and softball at Madison West in the early 1980s before going on to star at Notre Dame. She has been the UW-Milwaukee women's basketball coach for the past 11 seasons, leading the Panthers to two conference titles and two NCAA tournament appearances.
Kelliher was a three-year starter for the UW baseball team in the 1950s, then coached high school football and baseball in the city for 36 years, first at Madison Central from 1963 until its closing in 1969 and then at Madison East until retiring in 1996. He will join his brother, Dave, as a member of the Hall of Fame.
Borland, a former UW men's basketball player, was the first prep boys basketball coach at Madison Memorial and was a longtime athletic director, principal and administrator in the Madison school system.
The quartet will be honored at the induction ceremony and banquet June 4 at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. Tickets are $40 and will be available April 29. For more information, contact Hap Johnson at 608-836-9426.
