The Department of Natural Resources stocked 589,893 catchable-size rainbow, brown and brook trout in hundreds of waters statewide before the May 3 inland opener.
The fish were reared at the Nevin (Fitchburg), Osceola, St. Croix Falls, Langlade (White Lake), Brule and Lakewood state fish hatcheries. DNR crews transferred the fish, which are about 18 months old and up to 12 inches, from tank trucks into the water.
