Packers notes: Rodgers' shoulder no worse for Sunday's wear
By JASON WILDE

GREEN BAY — Aaron Rodgers won't practice Wednesday, and may be limited all week, but coach Mike McCarthy expects the Green Bay Packers quarterback to start Sunday's game at Seattle.

Rodgers, who suffered a dislocated right (throwing) shoulder at Tampa Bay Sept. 28 and took only a dozen or so jog-through snaps during last week's three days of practice, completed 25 of 37 passes for 313 yards with three touchdowns and one interception Sunday in the Packers' 27-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers was reexamined Monday morning by team doctor Pat McKenzie, who determined Rodgers' shoulder didn't worsen from playing Sunday.

"We're going to go into the week planning on Aaron to play, just based off the conversation I just had with Dr. McKenzie. He thinks we're ahead of where we were last week," McCarthy said. "We're looking at (Rodgers being) potentially limited Thursday (in practice), and we'll take it from there."

Rodgers did rehabilitation work Monday and will do so again Tuesday and Wednesday. In the meantime, McCarthy said the coaches graded him as having a "winning performance" against the Falcons, although Rodgers took the blame for the loss afterward, saying his fourth-quarter interception "cost us the game."

"I thought he played very well," quarterbacks coach Tom Clements said. "That was the one glaring mistake. Him being a competitor, he tried to make a play that wasn't there. When you're rolling to your right and you throw back behind you and it's late over the middle — which we constantly talk about — sometimes you can get away with things. But that still doesn't make it right."

Health watch

McCarthy said it was obvious linebacker A.J. Hawk was bothered Sunday by the groin injury he suffered against Tampa Bay, which kept him out of practice all week. It's possible Hawk will be held out Sunday against the Seahawks.

"It affected his play at times. The burst wasn't probably what it was in the past," McCarthy said, referring to the Falcons' first touchdown pass, to tight end Justin Peele.

"Missing practice time doesn't help anybody, so we'll see how he feels Wednesday and make sure we try to get him some practice time if he were to go in Seattle."

Left tackle Chad Clifton's hamstring injury will cause him to "miss some time this week," but Clifton isn't expected to miss Sunday's game. McCarthy and offensive line coach James Campen were both critical of Clifton's play against the Falcons.

"Chad didn't have a very good day," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said defensive end Mike Montgomery, who started in place of out-for-the-year Cullen Jenkins, was having his sprained ankle tested. "Michael's a tough guy, so I think if it's not too serious he'll be back sooner than later," McCarthy said.

Montgomery's replacement, rookie Jeremy Thompson, "did OK. It's a good experience for him, but tryouts are over. ... He needs to be more aggressive with his opportunities."

Asked about unproductive pass-rushing defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, who has just a half-sack this season, McCarthy said the coaches would spend Monday night and today "talking about the defensive line and making sure we are using the rotation that can help us the best."

Safety Atari Bigby, out since pulling his hamstring at Detroit Sept. 14, will be tested again this week but "his test didn't go very well last week," McCarthy said, and "until he can get through the testing process, he won't be active."

Flag day

McCarthy said the team would send its weekly DVD into the NFL officiating office as usual, and that "it will probably be the same as it has been the last four weeks because there has been a lot to talk about."

That was as close as he'd come to criticizing the officiating in Sunday's loss to the Falcons, not wanting to incur a fine from the league. But two calls — the holding call on Jermichael Finley that wiped out Mason Crosby's 43-yard field goal, and a 20-yard pass interference flag on Pat Lee on a third-down incompletion to keep a Falcons touchdown drive alive — clearly bugged the Packers, especially Lee's interference penalty.

"I thought that was a tight call," McCarthy said. "We didn't grade (Lee) down for that particular play."
