GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers continued their patient search for a capable No. 2 behind new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers Tuesday, bringing in veteran backup Gus Frerotte for a visit.
Frerotte, who turns 37 in late July, was released by the St. Louis Rams on Feb. 28 after seeing action in eight games (three starts) last season.
Frerotte completed 94 of 167 attempts (56.3 percent) for 1,014 yards, seven touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 11 sacks for a 58.3 passer rating.
Frerotte, whom the Rams released to avoid having to pay a $500,000 roster bonus, saw the bulk of his action in four games last season in place of Marc Bulger.
His first extended action came in a 34-31 loss to Arizona on Oct. 7, when he was 24-for-43 for 262 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He then struggled in a 22-3 loss at Baltimore on Oct. 14, when he was 19-for-36 for 208 yards and threw five INTs.
Frerotte was 20-for-32 for 161 yards with one TD and one INT in a 24-19 loss to Seattle on Nov. 25, then had his best game of the season in a 28-16 victory over Atlanta on Dec. 2, when he was 23 of 35 for 311 with three TDs and two INTs for a season-high 98.6 rating.
Frerotte, who was set to make $1.4 million in base salary in 2008, has played for seven teams since entering the league in 1994: Washington (1994 through '98), Detroit (1999), Denver (2000 through '01), Cincinnati (2002), Minnesota (2003 through '04), Miami (2005) and the Rams.
In 136 career games, he's thrown 102 touchdown passes, 91 interceptions and has an overall rating of 74.3.
Frerotte is the second potential backup the Packers are known to have brought in for a visit, with ex-Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray having visited Green Bay March 11. An NFL source said Frerotte will visit the Vikings Wednesday.
