GREEN BAY — If you're among the thousands of new Wisconsin-based New York Jets fans because of that new quarterback the J-E-T-S have, well, does WISC-TV have good news for you.
The station — Ch. 3 in Madison — will broadcast the Jets' Sept. 7 regular-season opener at the Miami Dolphins, and it could be the first of many Brett Favre games the CBS affiliate will carry.
WISC programming director Jeff Robbins said Monday that the station has requested all the Jets' games that are set to air on CBS, which is the home network for AFC games. The NFC games, including those of Favre's former team, the Green Bay Packers, generally air on Fox.
The Jets are slated to play 12 times on CBS — subject to the late-season flex scheduling — with four games on other networks. Their Sept. 22 game at San Diego is on ESPN's Monday Night Football, and they also have two games on Fox (against Arizona Sept. 28 and St. Louis on Nov. 9) and one game on the NFL Network (at New England on Nov. 13).
However, neither of the Fox games will be seen in the Madison market, as the Packers will be playing on Ch. 47 at the same time.
"The first two weeks are no-brainers. As long as the Jets are competitive, we'll run them," Robbins said, referring to the opener and the Jets' Sept. 14 game at New England. "But if they go in the tank halfway through the season, I'll guess we'll have more conversation about which game to run."
The Packers have two games on CBS this season: Oct. 19 against Indianapolis (a 3:15 p.m. start) and Dec. 7 against Houston (noon). The Jets play at Oakland at 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 19, meaning the two games would conflict, while New York plays at San Francisco on Dec. 7, at 3:15 p.m.
Robbins said CBS affiliates throughout the state will be carrying Favre's debut with his new team, and that the stations have been deemed "constant," meaning they won't be switching to other games no matter what the score — something normally reserved only for Packers games.
Robbins said he was on vacation at the time of the Aug. 6 trade that sent Favre to the Jets for a conditional fourth-round draft pick, but he knew immediately it was good news for WISC.
"That was my immediate thought: 'This is fantastic news for us,'" Robbins said.
After the first two weeks, WISC can't have "Bretty and the Jets" back until Oct. 12, when the Cincinnati Bengals play at New York, but Robbins plans on airing as many Jets games as he can.
"We figured right away there would be a huge interest with people who have followed the Packers for the last (16) years. So right away when the trade happened, we contacted CBS," Robbins said, adding that the station has received 25 to 30 e-mails and the same number of calls about whether it would air Jets games.
"The response we're getting is 100 percent, 'We want to see Jets games and we want to see Favre.' Maybe the anti-Favre (faction) will contact us after the fact and say, 'Why are you running that?'"
