Packers notes: Driver returns to team

GREEN BAY — Donald Driver was back where he's the happiest Friday: On the football field.

The Green Bay Packers' veteran wide receiver returned to work after missing the previous two days of practice while traveling to Houston to be with his ailing father, Marvin Driver Jr., who was hospitalized after what his family claims was a police beating early Monday morning.

"I'm doing fine," said Driver, who visited with his father on Thursday before flying back to Green Bay. "I sat down with my dad and talked to my dad the last couple days, and I was just trying to get an understanding of exactly what happened, and we seemed to get that understanding.

"I just wanted to see my dad, just to make sure he was OK. And when I got down there, he was doing fine. He's a tough cookie. He had a smile on his face when I left. He told me to get back to work, so I had to go back to work."

In Houston, officials said the two accused police officers have been taken off patrol duty. Officers Bacilio Guzman and Gilberto Cruz have been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an investigation of the alleged incident, Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said Friday.

Marvin Driver was arrested early Monday for outstanding traffic warrants but claims that before arriving in jail, he was beaten by the two officers. He remains in good condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said.

Donald Driver said he was unaware that the two officers had been taken off the streets — "I've been at practice, I haven't heard anything," he said when informed by reporters — and said he is communicating with the Houston police internal affairs division about the case.

"When they find out something, they'll let me know," he said. "I have a job to do, plain and simple. I knew I had to come back to work. I just wanted to make sure everything was OK before I left town, and he was doing fine.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spent much of the individual drills period of practice talking with Driver on the sideline.

"It was great to have him back. I think he feels better since he had a chance to get down there and visit with everybody," said McCarthy, who expects Driver to play in Monday night's game at New Orleans. "Donald is very positive-minded. He seems in very good spirits."

Health watch

It might be the start of the cold and flu season, but what the Packers are being hit with is a mini-epidemic of calf injuries.

Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Kampman, reserve safety Charlie Peprah and No. 3 halfback DeShawn Wynn have all been added to the injury report with the mysterious injury, which McCarthy said he discussed with team doctor Pat McKenzie "at length" during Friday morning's medical evaluation meeting.

"You always look at any injury if there's a pattern," McCarthy said. "They've assured me that they feel they're just individual cases."

Wynn and Peprah are listed as questionable, while Kampman is probable. Kampman said the medical staff was just being its "always cautious" self with his injury. "I didn't even know I was listed as anything (on the injury report)," Kampman said.

Also probable are left tackle Chad Clifton (knees), Driver (knee), defensive end Jeremy Thompson (groin), center Scott Wells (shoulder) and cornerback Charles Woodson (toe). Special teamer Jarrett Bush (ankle) and No. 4 receiver James Jones (knee) both had setbacks during the week and are listed as questionable. Both will be tested Saturday.

In New Orleans, halfback Reggie Bush (knee) did not practice after working on Thursday and is listed as questionable. Wide receiver Marques Colston (knee), running back Deuce McAllister (knee), center Jonathan Goodwin (knee) and right tackle Jon Stinchcomb (calf) are all probable.
