VERONA -- Dale Buvid has so much respect for the Verona prep softball team that he equated it to a "college program in high school."
The Monroe coach then went on to recite the recent resume of the Wildcats.
"Six state appearances in a row and 12 Badger Conference championships in a row,'' Buvid said. "We tied them a few times but to win up here is huge.''
Backed by 11 strikeouts from Renee Schuttler and clutch hitting by right fielder Brandi Trewartha, the Cheesemakers -- far from slouches themselves -- claimed a 2-0 victory over Verona in a Southern Badger game Monday afternoon at Field of Dreams.
Schuttler scattered four hits without a walk. The right-hander got out of a two-out jam with runners on second and third with a strikeout in the third inning, and induced an inning-ending flyout with two on in the sixth.
"We thought we'd be able to get some things going but we could never get that extra hit to really mount the rally, which again goes back to (Schuttler) making some good pitches in tough situations,'' Verona coach Chad Tuescher said.
Conversely, Monroe (8-1, 3-0 Southern Badger) put the bat on the ball when it was most needed.
With a runner on first and two outs in the second, Trewartha drove a shot just steps in front of the center field wall. Verona's Sadie Ewing ranged to her right to chase the ball down, only to have it glance off her glove. Courtesy runner Stephanie Hoover scored from first for a 1-0 lead.
The run helped settle Schuttler, who relied on an inside fastball to come within two strikeouts of matching her career high.
"It makes me not stress out as much, making sure that I don't have to get everything right and not make any mistakes," Schuttler said of the early lead.
Trewartha knocked in the insurance run with a sixth-inning single that again scored Hoover, who was running for catcher Kylie Kaiser (3-for-3).
"Any runs we can get is good,'' Trewartha said.
Verona right-hander Bev Nordin, who struck out five, kept the score at 1-0 with a heads-up play in the third. With runners on second and third, Nordin fielded a comebacker and faked the throw to first. She then wheeled toward third, creating a rundown situation that ended with a tag at the plate.
"We made some good plays but we also let a few plays get away from us,'' said Tuescher, whose team fell to 2-2, 2-2. "It wasn't from lack of effort, we just didn't quite get it done."
