COTTAGE GROVE -- Part of the Madison Memorial boys golf team's pre-tournament ritual is to set a goal and try to match it.
On Thursday in The Invitational at The Oaks Golf Course, Spartans coach Jeremy Schlitz set a goal of 301.
Memorial didn't quite reach that -- missing by just seven strokes -- but behind junior Tim McCormick's 2-over-par 73, the Spartans shot a 308 and won by seven strokes over Sun Prairie and Monona Grove.
"When we left my home at 6 a.m., we figured 301 would be the target," Schlitz said. "But it wasn't as windy when we left my driveway as it was when we started. Despite missing our goal, the kids played a solid round of golf."
Senior Sean Regan added a 76, sophomore Quinn Moe shot a 79 and senior Stephen Lange tallied an 80.
McCormick's 73 was highlighted by birdies on his first two holes.
"I got lucky today," McCormick said. "On my first hole, the 12th, I thought my 40-foot putt was going to go off the green but it hit the hole and went in. Then on 13, I hit a solid tee shot and made a 7-footer for birdie. I could have gone lower, but overall I am happy with my round."
Madison La Follette senior Max Hosking was the only golfer to break 70 on the windy afternoon, shooting a 2-under 69 to capture medalist honors.
"This was by far one of the best rounds in my career," said Hosking, whose lowest competitive round is a 66. "I hit my driver straight, made all my short putts and eliminated most of my mistakes. I stayed patient and kept my big numbers to bogeys. On this course, if you make mistakes, your big numbers could be 9s and 10s not bogeys or doubles."
