Prep track: Dodgeland's Rennhack highlights Deerfield Classic

DEERFIELD — When Megan Rennhack woke up and checked her computer for a weather forecast Friday morning, she figured she was in for a long night.

"It was all thunderstorms," the Dodgeland senior said. "So I was like, 'This meet is going to (stink) because it's going to rain and they're not going to cancel it. I'll be there until like midnight and I've got to run (today).' But it turned out nice. It's just windy."

The results for Rennhack at the 19th Deerfield Classic Track and Field Meet were nice as well. She broke a pair of meet records and won four events overall on a blustery night.

But Rennhack saw room for improvement.

She was disappointed in her performance in the 300-meter low hurdles, which she completed in a meet-record 44.48 seconds. It also was the best time in the state this season, according to WisSports.net.

But Rennhack — who also won the 100 high hurdles (her time of :14.84 was another meet record), the 100-meter dash and the long jump — was mad because she took a glance at the scoreboard to check out what her time was, something she's never done before.

"I could have ran harder," said Rennhack, who was hoping to crack the 44-second barrier (her personal best is 44.2). "My butt didn't hurt, because after I run, usually my butt hurts. If I run really hard, it hurts. And it didn't, so I'm upset."

Sugar River senior Ashley Beutler broke her own meet mark in the 1,600, running by herself for much of the 5:07.23 — the second-place finisher, Pardeeville junior Samantha Bluske, was nearly 27 seconds behind.

"I wasn't planning on doing that for the (1,600)," said Beutler, who was going to save her energy for the 3,200. "But one of the girls, Samantha, stuck with me for the about first 800 (meters), and I figured, you start a race strong, you should finish it strong."

It was the same story in the 3,200, where Beutler finished in 10:47.58 — easily the best time in the state this year — to break Bluske's meet record.

Beutler also anchored the Raiders' 3,200-relay team, which set another record in 9:58.90.

Columbus won the girls team title with 94 points, while Deerfield took the boys trophy with 86. Pardeeville senior Luke Standiford repeated in the 200 and the 400.

He also won the long jump and helped the Bulldogs place first in the 1,600 relay.
