WIAA Division 7 state football: Burlington Catholic Central caps perfect season
Burlington Catholic Central capped a special season in record-setting fashion Thursday as the Hilltoppers beat Hilbert 37-14 at Camp Randall Stadium in the WIAA Division 7 state football championship game.
Reese Hartlage threw three touchdown passes to B.J. Ritzman as Burlington Catholic Central (14-0) as won its first WIAA title. Hartlage threw for a Division 7-record 219 yards, while Ritzman set or matched division records for catches (six), yards (136) and touchdowns.
The duo gave the Hilltoppers a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, combining on a Division 7 record 63-yard touchdown pass.
"Reese and I have been friends for a long time and all the hard work we put in over the summer came together today," Ritzman said.
Senior Max Vos rushed for 162 yards and two TDs for the Hilltoppers.
"We minimized our turnovers," Hilltoppers coach Tom Aldrich said, "while taking advantage of theirs."
Hilbert senior quarterback Luke Pattermann rushed for two TDs, including a record 80-yard scamper in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-14.
But the Hilltoppers went on an 11-play, 76-yard drive that took more than 5 minutes. Hartlage's 11-yard pass to Ritzman gave Burlington Catholic Central a 30-14 lead 2 seconds into the fourth quarter.
"Reese just knows where to put the ball perfectly every time,'' Ritzman said. "There's not a better quarterback anywhere.''
The Wolves, meanwhile, finished with four turnovers.
''In a game of this magnitude, you can't have those turnovers," said Hilbert coach Mike Breckheimer, whose team finished 13-1 said. "That's an absolute no-no."
