FINAL: Tennessee 21, Badgers 17

1:32 p.m. -- Tennessee is in victory formation after backup safety Antonio Wardlow intercepts a Tyler Donovan-to-Paul Hubbard pass attempt in the end zone, snuffing out the Badgers' last-second comeback victory attempt. The Badgers' bowl victory streak ends at two with a 21-17 loss to the Volunteers.

Fourth quarter: Crunching the numbers

1:23 p.m. -- ESPN just flashed a telling statistic from this game. Tennessee QB Erik Ange is 10-for-13 passing for 178 yards in third down situations today.

For the game, the Vols are 8-for-17 on third down situations with a big one upcoming. UW's Shane Carter and Jay Valai teamed to stop that one, setting up a Vols' punt and giving UW its last shot to pull out a victory.

1:18 p.m. -- A lengthy officials' replay review -- it lasted more than 8 minutes -- resulted in them overturning an apparent fumble recovery by UW safety  Jay Valai at the end of a Tennessee third-down conversion.

It was initially ruled that Tennessee receiver Josh Brisco fumbled while being tackled by UW's O'Brien Schofield at the Badgers' 40. Valai recovered the ball along the sideline, initially giving UW possession (as it was ruled on the field) with 3:19 to play.

Officials ruled that Valai did not have possession of the football before going out-of-bounds. In fact, it appeared on the replay that Valai's left foot was on the white sideline marking as he scooped it up.

The Vols' drive continues from the Badger 40-yard line.

1:06 p.m. --
The Badgers miss a golden scoring opportunity, failing on a fourth down and 2 from the Tennessee 10 with just under 6 minutes to play.

After a nine-yard pass to Beckum (his first catch of the day), Donovan's  fourth down pass sailed high out of the back of the end zone causing Beckum to take off and slam down his helmet in frustration. On TV, meanwhile, ESPN commentators question the play call and electing not to give tailback P.J. Hill a chance to pound the ball up the middle and pick up the first down on the ground.

12:57 p.m. -- After gaining 11 yards in the third quarter, Tennessee and quarterback Erik Ainge moved into scoring position only to have the Vols pull Ainge in favor of option threat Gerald Jones. Unable to pick up a first down, Tennessee settles for a field goal, which is blocked by sophomore linebacker Elijah Hodge, who went to high school in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Third quarter: Volunteers 21, Badgers 17

12:42 p.m. -- Senior kicker Taylor Mehlhaff drills a 27-yard field goal with 9 seconds left in the quarter to pull UW within four points.

After being forced to punt on their first three possessions of the second half, the Badgers traveled 49 yards in 10 plays to come away with points.

Third quarter: View from the pressbox

12:15 p.m -- UW tight end Travis Beckum is the intended target of his first pass of the game with about 9:30 left in the third, though Donovan's pass to Beckum was broken up by a Tennessee defender.

Halftime: Crunching the numbers

Noon -- Of the first eight passes completed by UW quarterback Tyler Donovan, five have gone to tight ends -- four to Garrett Graham (for 37 yards) and one to Andy Crooks (for a 4-yard touchdown). Amazingly, Travis Beckum has yet to see a pass thrown in his direction.

Halftime: Bielema speaks

11:55 a.m. -- ESPN sideline reporter Rob Stone caught up with Bret Bielema as he headed into the lockerroom at halftime and the UW coach was surprisingly upbeat. He told Stone that the defense needs to make more plays and the durability of quarterback Tyler Donovan doesn't surprise him.

"Tyler's a tough kid," said Bielema, who added that he spoke with officials about a couple of hits on his senior QB that he felt were cheap shots. "I saw a couple helmet-to-helmets. I voiced my displeasure and we got a call after that.''

Second quarter: Volunteers 21, Badgers 14

11:30 a.m. -- The Badgers close to within a touchdown after Donovan finds senior tight end Andy Crooks from four yards out with 1:03 to go before halftime.

It was Crooks' first reception of the season.

Second quarter: View from the pressbox

11:23 a.m. -- Donovan is back in at quarterback.

Second quarter: Volunteers 21, Badgers 7

11:20 -- Tennessee takes a two touchdown lead when Ainge connects with tight end Brad Cottam for a 31-yard score. Cottam beat the coverage of Jonathan Casillas on the play.

Second quarter: View from the pressbox

11:16 a.m. -- Donovan's painful day continues when he suffers an apparent left knee injury on a scramble on the first play of the Badgers fifth possession.

Allan Evridge is into the game.

Second quarter: Volunteers 14, Badgers 7

11:06 a.m. -- Tennessee wastes little time, covering 57 yards in 55 seconds, taking the lead when Ainge connects with Josh Briscoe for a 29-yard TD pass with 9:45 to go before halftime.

Briscoe, running across the field from right to left, gained and maintained separation from UW strong safety Aubrey Pleasant on the play.

End of first quarter: Badgers 7, Volunteers 7

10:50 a.m. -- Former Notre Dame and NFL great Joe Montana is on hand to present some kind of award to a high school quarterback.

First quarter: Badgers 7, Volunteers 7

10:30 a.m. -- UW evens the score with 7:33 to go in the quarter thanks to a 6-yard TD run by quarterback Tyler Donovan, though it came at a painful price.

Donovan absorbed a wicked blow to the head by Tennessee safety Eric Berry after crossing the goal line, and was slow to get up afterward.

Donovan's scramble came one play after the Badgers had a 1-yard TD run by Zach Brown wiped out by an illegal motion penalty.

First quarter: Volunteers 7, Badgers 0

10:17 a.m. -- Tennessee gets on the board first, capping a nine-play, 66-yard drive with a 3-yard run by Gerald Jones on a direct snap from the shotgun formation.

Jones, a freshman wide receiver, took the snap while positioned next to quarterback Erik Ainge, and worked his to the end zone through the left side of the line with 9:49 left in the quarter.

The big play on the drive was a 40-yard reception by Denarius Moore, who was able to break away from UW cornerback Josh Nettles after Nettles tried to make a play on the ball.

Pregame

9:25 a.m. -- Welcome to Tampa, where both the Badgers and Volunteers are immersed in their pregame warmups.

Despite saying sophomore Josh Nettles would start at left cornerback over the course of the last week, senior Ben Strickland is working with the No. 1 defense at that spot during warmups.

Redshirt sophomore O'Brien Schofield appears to be starting at left defensive end. Schofield hasn't played a defensive snap this season going into the game.

Tennessee strong-side linebacker Ryan Karl (elbow) appears likely to start.
