Pregame update

Senior fullback Chris Pressley (thumb) and senior tight end Travis Beckum (hamstring) are in uniform for pregame warmups, although that doesn't necessarily mean they'll play today.

Senior linebacker Jonathan Casillas (knee) is also going through pregame warmups, but UW coach Bret Bielema said earlier this week he'd be surprised if Casillas played in the opener.

No Beckum, no Casillas, no Pressley

As suspected, the Badgers will be without three key senior performers today. Probably a wise move for the team's long-term interests.

That didn't take long ...

Wisconsin 7, Akron 0 -- 10:37 left, first quarter

Scoring play: Garrett Graham 3-yard pass from Allan Evridge (Phillip Welch kick). Drive stats: Nine plays, 67 yards, 4:23.

The Badgers get a good start in their quest to win their 11th straight season opener, rolling downfield on a nine-play, 67-yard drive that featured seven running plays but included a pair of nifty passes.

Credit Graham for hauling in a wobbler from Evridge for a 20-yard gain to the Akron 12-yard line on an out route. He then slipped into open space in the end zone for an easy TD grab.

The scoring pass was the first of Evridge's career at Wisconsin, and Welch nailed his first career extra-point attempt.

Evridge entered the year with just 12 passing attempts for the Badgers, and is making his first start since Nov. 31, 2005 when he was still at Kansas State.

P.J.'s on fire

Wisconsin 14, Akron 0 -- 7:20 left, first quarter

Scoring play: P.J. Hill 2-yard run (Welch kick). Drive stats: Four plays, 61 yards, 1:42.

P.J. Hill was shaken up temporarily by what appeared to be a helmet to the groin on the first series, when he moved into the No. 8 spot in career rushing yards at Wisconsin.

But he was back up to speed for the second series, putting the Badgers on his shoulders during a four-play, 61-yard drive that consumed all of 1:42.

Hill got the carry on every play during the drive, the highlight being a 46-yard jaunt against little resistance that put Wisconsin at the 2-yard line, setting up his TD. Hill was slowed by traffic in front of him downfield and made a nice cutback before getting caught from behind.

Already, he has eight rushes for 93 yards. Hill entered the day at No. 10 on the all-time list with 2,805 yards but already has passed Carl McCullough (1993, 95-97) and Rufus Ferguson (1970-72).

Next target: Larry Emery, who rushed for 2,979 yards from 1983-86. That's surpassable today. It'll likely take a few games to catch No. 6 on this list -- the 1954 Heisman Trophy winner, Alan Ameche, who amassed 3,345 as a Badger.
