Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra cancels Halloween show due to strike
The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (WCO) cancelled its second show — the family-friendly Halloween concert at Overture Center's Capitol Theater on Oct. 24 — due to WCO's musicians continued strike.
Doug Gerhart, WCO executive director, said the Halloween concert was cancelled on Tuesday when the musicians declined to perform while negotiations were ongoing.
"Our commitment to our audience must be honored," said WCO board president Tom Grantham. "We simply cannot let them down by cancelling concerts at the last minute."
The WCO, best known for its summertime Concerts on the Square, cancelled its season-opening Masterworks concert Oct. 3 due to the strike. Issues in the strike talks range from the WCO's 34 part-time musicians desire for increased attendance flexibility to an enhanced peer review committee.
The Madison Symphony Orchestra is a different organization from the WCO. The MSO's concerts on Oct. 17-19 at Overture Hall are not affected.
