Fire in western Grant County kills two

Two people are dead from a fire early Monday in western Grant County.

The victims were found in one of two trailer homes that were reported on fire shortly before 4:30 a.m. at 5 Jackley Lane in the village of Bagley.

The names of the dead have not been released pending notification of family. But Ruth Jackley, who owns the 11-unit trailer park with her husband, Paul Jackley, said the victims were a husband and wife who had lived in the park since about 2004.

The trailer park, which the Jackleys started in the early 1970s, is less than a block from the Fire Department.

When fire fighters from Bagley and Bloomington arrived on the scene they found that the fire in the victims’ trailer had spread to a neighboring trailer. No injuries were reported from the second trailer fire.

Roger Straka, Bagley’s village president and a member of the Fire Department, said he was one of the first people on the scene and that flames were shooting through the roof. He said the fire was not suspicious in nature.

"It appears to be accidental but we won’t know for sure until the autopsies are done," Straka said.

Autopsies are scheduled for today at 9 a.m. in Madison.

The case remains under investigation by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department and the state fire marshal’s office.

Bagley is near the Mississippi River just south of Prairie du Chien.
