Volunteer honors: Six area individuals will be honored at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital annual volunteer recognition luncheon Wednesday at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee.

Jim Schnering, of Madison, and Gordy Wahlgren, of Mount Horeb, will each receive a plaque in recognition of their 20 years of service. Awards for 10,000 hours of service will be presented to George Cambridge, of Madison, and Tim Jackman, of Middleton; for 8,750 hours to Joyce Clampitt, of Cross Plains; and for 7,500 hours to Ethel Anding, of Madison.

Student honors: Two Madison students are among 800 across the nation to receive National Achievement Scholarships. Taylor M. Behnke, an Edgewood High School senior, and Matthew Bowie-Wilson, a West High senior, received $2,500 each.

More than 150,000 black students from across the country entered the scholarship competition through the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors. Top scorers were then judged on academic performance, recommendations, SAT scores and a personal essay.

Kohl scholars: The following area students were selected by a statewide committee as 2009 Herb Kohl Foundation Excellence Scholarship winners for their academic achievements, leadership outside the classroom and potential for succeeding in college and beyond. Each receives a $1,000 award.

Area winners are Drew Birrenkott, McFarland High School; Holly Buell, Mauston High School; Carson Crist, Darlington High School; Amanda Curtis, Verona High School; Jena Daggett, Portage High School; Hannah Fanney, Lodi High School; Kurt Flesch, Platteville High School.

Melissa Nied, Mayville High School; Jill Niles, New Lisbon High School; Zachary Schwartz, Marshall High School; Emily Sokn, Milton High School; Amanda Spencer, Verona High School; Tracy Turba, Platteville High School; Madison Vander Hill, Madison, who is home schooled; Micah Wallace, Brodhead High School and John Ziegler, Milton High School.

Class reunions: Monona Grove High School’s Class of 1959 will observe their 50th reunion on June 27 at the Madison Elk’s Club, 711 Jenifer St. Members of other classes and faculty are also invited. Madison West High School’s Class of 1959 will celebrate their 50th reunion on the weekend of July 10 to 12. Friday’s gathering will be at the Coliseum Bar, 232 E. Olin Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturday a women’s gathering will be held at Captain Bill’s, 2701 Century Ave., Middleton, from 2 to 5 p.m., followed by the main event at Blackhawk Country Club, 3606 Blackhawk Drive, Shorewood, from 7 p.m. to midnight. A picnic will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Lakeview Park, 6300 Lakeview St., Middleton.
