Honors: The Arc-Dane County, an advocacy organization to ensure the rights of children and adults with developmental disabilities, recently gave awards to several individuals and businesses for their support.
Their Lifetime Achievement award went to Hermine Dicke, who pioneered this advocacy work beginning in 1957 for what was then known as the Madison Area Council on Retardation.
The Teacher-Educator award was given to Dr. Joseph Schmiedicke, dean of the school of education at Edgewood College, for developing Edgewood’s special education graduate program in the early 1970s and, more recently, the Cutting Edge college degree program for students with developmental disabilities.
Other awards include the Media award, to Matthew DeFour of the Wisconsin State Journal; the Self-Advocate award to Petra Zwettler; Community Support award to Marybeth Wilk; Corporate Support award to Stafford Rosenbaum LLP; Volunteer award to R.S.V.P. of Dane County and the R.E.A.D.I. Oscar Mayer volunteer program; Employer award to Just Coffee; Direct Caregiver to Laurie Bussian, Flo Slowiak and John Grabowski; Elected Official award to Dane County supervisors Barbara Vedder and Bret Husley; President’s award to Susan and James Dvorsky and Special Recognition award to Jeremy Shafton.
Student Honors: Daniel Salem, a senior at Madison West High School and son of Peter and Patricia Salem, has been awarded a $3,000 National Merit corporate scholarship from Wyeth. Daniel will attend Haverford College, Haverford, Pa.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Madison Elks Lodge 410 recently awarded scholarships to four young women in three area high schools. They are Kori Bertun of Madison East High School, Debra Statz of Waunakee High School and Ashlee Coorough and Katie Williams, both of DeForest High School.
Class reunions: Madison East High School’s Class of 1954 will celebrate its 55th reunion on the weekend of July 10 and 11. Both gatherings will be at the Elks Club, 711 Jenifer St., on Friday, from 5 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, from 5 to 10:30 p.m. For information, call Dean Hewitt at 608-249-1579.
The Monona Grove High School Class of 1964 will hold its 45th reunion on the weekend of July 10 and 11.
