A two-vehicle, head-on crash on Highway 14 near Arena left one person dead and shut the road down for nearly four hours Saturday, the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash happened at about 2:30 p.m. on Highway 14 west of Highway K when a westbound 1997 Ford pickup truck crossed the centerline and hit an eastbound 1995 Chevy Suburban.

One driver was pronounced dead at the scene; the other was taken to UW Hospital in Madison. Names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families, and the sheriff’s office declined to say which driver was behind the wheel of which vehicle.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.
