A Madison man has been identified as the driver killed in a traffic crash Saturday on Highway 14, west of Highway K, in the town of Arena.

Bruce P. Laylan, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene after a 1997 Ford pickup truck crossed the center line and struck Laylan’s 1995 Chevy Suburban head-on, according to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of the pickup, William F. Wegge, 73, Arena, was taken to UW Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was listed in fair condition Sunday.

The crash closed access to Highway 14 for nearly four hours as both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles. Sheriff’s officers said both men were wearing seat belts and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
