Know Your Madisonian: Genna Eaton

Genna Eaton saw a need in Waunakee and moved to solve it, not waiting for other groups or agencies to step in. She started Waunakee Neighborhood Connection, which provides clothing and household goods as well as information and other services to people and families in need.

What spurred you to take this step?

About four years ago, I saw a couple of my sons’ classmates’ mothers reaching out for help, and I called a few friends and we got the needs met. With research and perseverance, Waunakee Neighborhood Connection was formed and has evolved into a place where people can come for help.

How does Waunakee Neighborhood Connection complement the work of other groups and agencies?

We provide a resource list, which contains information on useful agencies in our area. We each offer unique services, but by working together, needs are met in a timely and caring manner. An ad-hoc group has just formed to try to combine services of many of these groups and agencies so that they would be housed under one roof to better enable families to go to one place instead of many places.

What has the reception been in Waunakee to your efforts?

This organization has faced challenges throughout our inception and growth. However, Waunakee Neighborhood Connection is now basically a household word. People know there is a place where volunteers care about families in need in our area. It’s been amazing to see individuals and groups all working toward the same goal.

What’s next for you or Waunakee Neighborhood Connection?

Finding a larger facility — we currently have 900 square feet — to serve more than 170 families or more than 400 individuals. We’ll also explore or examine the possibility of merging other service organizations with us to offer more services to families in need in one central location and possibly extend our service area.

What would you say to a community thinking about starting a similar group?

It takes lots of planning, organizing and funding. We inspired an individual in DeForest who we now work with who is wanting to provide similar services there.

What have you learned in this experience?

I’ve learned that life is truly about people and relationships and my legacy to my kids is just that.
