Four teams of Madison police and fire prevention officers will be patrolling the city this week to respond to noise complaints and, if necessary, issue citations to those violating city fireworks ordinances.
Fines range from $172 to $1,000 plus court costs, even for a first offense.
Lori Wirth said the increased enforcement around the Fourth of July is a safety precaution and a response to the annual wave of complaints from "citizens who feel like they’re living in a war zone." Madison has not had a major fireworks-related fire in several years, she said.
Wirth recommended simply not buying or using fireworks, especially, she said, because the city of Madison typically has stricter rules for fireworks than surrounding municipalities.
Roman candles and fountains, for example, are sold nearby but prohibited within the city limits, Wirth said.
Sparklers, snakes, snaps, caps and party poppers are legal, but Wirth said she still recommends adult supervision because most burn at high temperatures and could be dangerous.
