The driver of a pizza delivery vehicle that struck and killed a man in downtown Madison Tuesday night will not be cited in the incident, police said Wednesday.
Thy Vong, 41, of Madison, was killed at about 10:10 p.m. at the intersection of West Johnson and North Frances streets.
The Dane County coroner’s office said Vong died of blunt force head injuries.
Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said the crash is a reminder that pedestrians should be careful crossing Downtown streets. "We have had a lot of close calls and a couple of fatalities with pedestrians crossing in the middle of the street," he said.
Madison Police Lt. John Radovan said three people were crossing the intersection diagonally, from the southeast corner where the Nitty Gritty Restaurant and Bar is, to the northwest corner.
The pizza delivery vehicle was in the far left lane, going east on the one-way Johnson Street. The first two pedestrians crossed in front of the pizza delivery vehicle. "The driver was focused on them and moved one lane to the right to avoid hitting them" and struck Vong, Radovan said.
