The editor and publisher of The Progressive said he expects the Madison-based magazine to be around for another 100 years after exceeding a two-week fund-raising goal of $90,000 it needed to stay afloat.
In a letter to supporters, Matthew Rothschild said $121,895 has been raised in donations ranging from $5 to $30,000.
“It gets us through a real tight spot,” Rothschild said in an interview Tuesday.
Founded by Sen. Robert La Follette, The Progressive is celebrating its 100th year as a voice for peace and social justice. The monthly magazine has developed a national reputation with 46,500 paid subscribers.
“We have a very exceptionally loyal base of supporters and readers” who view The Progressive “not just as a magazine but as a cause,” Rothschild said.
The magazine is likely to make money this year, and the donations “should put us on more solid footing,” Rothschild told supporters in the letter.
But he acknowledged the magazine remains “undercapitalized,” or without enough money to sustain its operations long-term.
