Steve and Joan Quinn test a toy's lead content for Ashley Wilcox of Marshall, at right. The Quinns recently opened Elemental Safety, a McFarland-based lead testing business, with Dave and Joan Milke. A digital readout on a Niton XRF scanner used by Elemental Safety shows 18,700 parts per million of lead (Pb). Parts of this child's necklace, owned by Dave Milke's granddaughter, are 50 percent lead. Milke is a co-owner of Elemental Safety, a new lead testing firm. Steve Quinn performs a lead content test. Lead paint is commonly used to enhance the colors and flexibility in imported toys.
