Madison Area Technical College looking for new nickname

Madison Area Technical College officials are looking for a new nickname to differentiate the school from Milwaukee Area Technical College.

Both go by the acronym MATC, which causes confusion, said Becky Baumbach, vice president of strategic advancement.

"We want to make it so people can Google us and get to us, rather than Milwaukee," Baumbach said.

Last month, the Madison Area Technical College board considered changing the official name of the college.

President Bettsey Barhorst solicited suggestions from students, staff, and the community but ultimately recommended to the board that the school keep its name.

The school’s marketing team is still planning to rebrand the college with a different nickname.

When the president of Milwaukee Area Technical College was fired earlier this year after he was cited for drunken driving, Madison technical college officials were especially concerned about headlines blaring, "MATC board votes to fire president."

"That was not something we want to have to continually explain," Baumbach said.

The school’s name has changed six times in its history, most recently in 1993 from Madison Area Vocational, Technical and Adult Education District No. 4.
