WBCA All-Star Games: Maymon, North laugh last in Division 1 boys
Jeronne Maymon saw the dunking display by the South All-Stars during warm-ups of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 1 All-Star Game.
And it’s not that the former Madison Memorial standout didn’t want show off some of his high-flying skills Saturday morning at the University of Wisconsin Field House.
“It wasn’t going to be like that in the game,” Maymon said, “so there was no reason to waste my energy.”
Which turned out to be a pretty good strategy for Maymon, who scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the North to a 92-87 victory over the South.
An atypically physical game, by All-Star standards, saw the lead change 15 times and the score tied another 13. South forward Jason Ziemer — a former Verona athlete and UW-Stevens Point recruit — said the South coaches put a big emphasis on defense during the week’s practices.
“We had some tough practices and our coaches wanted us to play a lot of defense,” said Ziemer, who scored four points and grabbed five rebounds.
“How many dunks were there? One?”
There also were a handful of alley-oop attempts and missed dunks.
Maymon tried ooping one to himself early in the first quarter, when he scored 10 of his points, but came up a little short and settled for the lay-in.
He had another chance on an alley-oop early in the fourth quarter, but was fouled by South forward Brian Washington and ended up head over heels along the baseline for his efforts.
“They (are) the dunking squad,” Maymon said, referring to the South’s display during warm-ups. “We were waiting on them to do something (in the game).”
The one dunk came via Jamil Wilson, an Oregon recruit, with 5 seconds left in the game, not giving Maymon and the rest of the North squad much time to answer.
Both Maymon and Ziemer considered the long week a success — from team dinners, to bonding with new teammates over Nintendo Wii, to even the practices.
“It’s a long week,” said Maymon, a Marquette recruit. “But it all paid off.”
