In a rematch of Ironbowl XII, the Roscoe (Ill.) Rush were again no match for the Madison Mustangs.
Former UW-Platteville athlete David Pietrowiak threw for one touchdown and ran for another, and the defending Ironman Football League champion Mustangs intercepted Roscoe quarterback Joe Cotton three times in a 31-7 rout of the Rush on Saturday night in Madison’s home opener at Breitenbach Stadium in Middleton.
Two Jason Epps field goals gave the Mustangs (3-0) an early 6-0 lead before Pietrowiak found Mike Darden for a 37-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 12-0.
A safety and a third field goal by Epps gave the Mustangs, who defeated the Rush 23-13 to win last year’s title, a 17-0 halftime advantage.
Kyle Brodd, a former Middleton athlete, and Pietrowiak each added touchdown runs in the second half to help Madison pull away.
Pietrowiak finished 12-for-21 for 160 yards with two interceptions.
Former University of Wisconsin athlete James Kamoku registered three sacks for the Mustangs, who held the Rush to 34 yards rushing and 131 total yards.
Cotton completed 15 of 30 passes for 97 yards and three picks for the Rush, who committed 11 penalties for 111 yards. Madison was flagged 10 times in the game.
Cotton found receiver Antwon Jones for a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for Roscoe’s only score of the game.
