Steinhofer snags share of Fischer lead; Romo fires a 69

JANESVILLE — After struggling with his game at the WIAA state boys golf tournament earlier this month, Madison La Follette graduate Andrew Steinhofer decided to take a few weeks off from competitive golf.

The break did wonders for his golf game as Steinhofer shot an opening round 7-under-par 65 to share the first-round lead with Marquette golfer Kelly Kretz at the Ray Fischer Amateur Championship at Riverside Golf Course.

“I wasn’t playing very well the last part of the high school season,” said Steinhofer, who finished tied for seventh in Division 1. “So I decided to take a couple weeks off. I just hit some balls and had a couple lessons and that seemed to get me going.”

Steinhofer’s round didn’t start off on the right foot as he bogeyed his first hole.

Tied for the lead with Steinhofer was Kretz. Last year’s runner-up used a birdie-birdie finish to forge the tie.

“I made a lot of birdies today,” said Kretz, who lost in a playoff last year to Ben Bendtsen III, who has since turned professional.

After opening with a birdie 4 on his first hole, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, a Burlington native, finished with a 3-under 69.

“I went through a couple stages today,” Romo said. “I started out good, then took a 7 on a par 5 before battling back to get it to 4-under-par. I bogeyed the 17th hole (No. 8), then two-putted from 60 feet for a par to finish my round. I turned a 66 or 67 into a 69, but that’s golf.”
